How Much Local History Do You Know?
Germantown traces its origins to 1732, when George Buchanan received a large parcel of land in the area from Lord Baltimore and named it “Chestnut Ridge.” The first significant wave of German settlers arrived between 1835 and 1850, many coming from Pennsylvania, which had a large German immigrant population.Â
One of the earliest, Jacob Snyder, arrived from Germany in 1832 and eventually fell in love with a sunny hilltop near what is now Clopper Road. His sons helped build the road between Neelsville and Darnestown that we know today as Route 118, and the shops that soon appeared at the intersection of Route 118 and Clopper Road gave the community its name. Other founding German families, including the Richters, Metzes, and Stangs, are still remembered in the names of local streets.
In 1873, the B&O Railroad arrived and established a station near Mateny Hill Road, drawing businesses away from the original town center, which became known as “Old Germantown.” The railroad was transformative, connecting the community to goods and services from across the region and accelerating its growth and development.Â
Germantown also has an unexpected musical footnote: in the early 1970s, songwriter Bill Danoff was inspired while driving down Clopper Road to sketch out the melody and opening phrase of what would become “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” the beloved song he later co-wrote with Taffy Nivert and John Denver.
